Clan rebound with win over Wolf Pack
By Matt Lee
If the SFU Clan showed any weariness from their double date with the UBC Thunderbirds it didn’t show last Friday, as the men trumped the Thompson Rivers Wolf Pack by a 79-73 score.
Matt Kuzminski led the way with 16 points on the night while Sean Burke followed closely with 15. The two accounted for 39.2 per cent of the team offense on Friday as the Clan’s dynamic duo ate up the Wolf Pack defense.
The story of the season for the Clan continues to be the balanced offensive attack. Heading into the Friday date with Thompson Rivers, the team was being led by the play of seniors Kevin Shaw, Burke, Chas Kok, and Kuzminski, as the four had combined for 63.7 per cent of SFU’s total points this season.
SFU has been buoyed by the secondary attack, as players like Eric Burrell, Kevin Pribilsky, Gregory Gillies, and Jordan Nostedt have been able to step in and play quality minutes for head coach Scott Clark when the senior players need a breather.
The Clan will likely be hosting a playoff date with the Regina Rams in late February, a welcomed idea for the club. The team has been an astounding 6-2 on home court this season. Interestingly, the Clan’s road record now stands at a remarkable 7-1, demonstrating that the club can get it done away from the West Gym too.
This weekend, the Clan square off against the University of Victoria. The Vikes will be seeking revenge against SFU, who won their first and only game of the season in a 78-75 win in late October.
SFU also had another clash with the Wolf Pack on Saturday before returning home before the Olympic break. For scores and statistics, check athletics.sfu.ca.
