SFSS 2010: SFSS non-executive candidates
By David Proctor
Profiles of the candidates for non-executive positions follow. All undergrads may vote for the two at-large candidates, but faculty representatives are elected exclusively by students from that faculty. The representatives positions for the faculties of Environment, Applied Science, Health Science, and Communication, Art, and Technology will remain vacant following the election, as no candidates came forward. The Peak did not recieve profiles from at-large candidate Frederick Bantados or Education faculty representative candidate Todd McDonald.
PETER QUMSIEH, FOR ARTS AND SOCIAL SCIENCE REPRESENTATIVE
My primary focus will be on advancing what current representative Anton Bezglasnyy has done in the past and better develop the community within the faculty. Second, we’re kind of short on board members so one of our main duties is to fill the committees; I’ll be putting more time in to fill those vacant spots so that the SFSS can function properly. Third, I want to be a good liaison between the faculty and the board, really pushing our concerns. As far as experience goes, I’ve worked with municipal governments, so I have some experience in political environments. I’m the guy that gets study groups going because I want other students in that class to do well. I’m the guy that advocates on students’ behalf. I have had a lot of experience with advocating other students’ interests, so I think I’d like to take that one step further and advocate the interests of the faculty as a whole.
KEN YING, FOR BUSINESS REPRESENTATIVE
I am fairly involved, I love to have fun, and I have project managed for many events before, including Ball 4 Charity, which consisted of 14 teams and all of the profits went to Canadian Red Cross. I also chaired Chillin’ 4 Charity, which raised $2,661 for the Terry Fox Foundation. I scheduled over 40 business students to dunk in a dunk tank, and oversaw a group of volunteers, a DJ, and a barbeque for charity. All this was fun, and I am currently on the OC for Student Leadership Retreat, which is a retreat that happens every year for business students. I plan to have a great year this year with the SFSS and business students; I also plan to make as many business students as involved and as aware as possible for what the SFSS has to offer to students.
LORENZ YEUNG, FOR SCIENCE REPRESENTATIVE
I have been involved with many campus events under the faculty of Science. I was a committee member and team leader in the first ever Science Frosh this year, the co-chair of Geek Week, and the president of the Science Community Initiative (SCI). I have worked closely with the current Science rep Chantelle Chand to make these events successful. I am also the co-treasurer of the Biology Student Union, and have been active within the DSU community to organize inter-DSU events. During this time, I have seen inefficiencies and areas of improvement that I wish to address if elected. I also wish to develop SCI to allow better engagement of all science students, so everyone can get involved without having to do so from within a DSU. Above all, I aim to be approachable to all members of the science community and hope students won’t hesitate to talk to me.
JORDAN KOHN, FOR AT-LARGE REPRESENTATIVE
I have been the History Forum representative since January 2007. During that time Forum has appointed me to the Advocacy, Finance and Administrative Services, Remuneration Advisory, Constitution and Policy Review, and Commercial Services committees; currently I am a member of the last two. I have also been an active volunteer within other aspects of the Society having given my time to being a vote counter at the 2007 AGM, having leafleted for a variety of the Society’s campaigns and last week helping with the “More Buses Now” campaign. I am currently the History Student Union’s treasurer as well as being a past secretary, vice-president and president. I am running for the member at-large position as I feel that I have the experience that the new board will need. If elected, I will continue the current Board’s efforts to renovate the pub and advocate to government, transit, and the university.
