Contribute to The Peak!

Tired of our radical right-wing garbage or our lofty leftist naiveté? Not liking what you see in this paper week after week? Then you should write for The Peak.

As SFU’s independent student newspaper, The Peak is open to contributions from all students. We have 11 editors and four additional staff members helping us put the pages together, but volunteer contributors write the bulk of our content. We can only publish what we have, after all. And we want to publish you.

It’s not just writing — a newspaper also needs photographers, illustrators, comics for the humour section, and multimedia assistants as well. However you want to get involved, we’ve got something fun for you to do.

Getting started

The best way to get your feet wet is to come by our collective meetings. Meetings are Monday, 1:30 p.m. at the Peak office, which is stashed away underneath Higher Grounds and next to the Forum Chambers at MBC.

At collective meetings, we discuss announcements and issues pertinent to current and prospective contributors, preview the content for next week’s paper, and review the previous issue. All of our editors are present at meetings. If you’re not sure how you want to get involved, coming to collective is an good way to introduce yourself and find out more about what we do here.

If you’re not able to make it out to collective, the next best thing is to email the editor of the section that you want to write for, or you can also email our promotions coordinator (promotions@the-peak.ca) if you’re still undecided on how would you like to get involved. All you need to mention is that you’re interested in contributing to The Peak, and they’ll point you in the right direction.

Write as much or as little as you are able to manage. We understand that our volunteers are also students!

Getting paid, son

There are several ways that volunteering can lead to being paid in real money at The Peak.

Contributors get paid a set rate, depending on the type of article, after being successfully published in The Peak three times previously. Cartoons, illustrations and photos will also be remunerated on the same first-three-free basis, but have their own individual pay scales.

All editorial and staff positions are paid a weekly stipend, and are re-hired every semester.

On occasion, The Peak needs to hire a new promotions coordinator or a distribution coordinator. All of these openings are advertised in The Peak, so keep reading!

Getting hired!

We’ll be hiring for our fall positions later in the semester! Keep checking back here for more information on how to apply.

Getting in touch with the current holder of the position you’re thinking about applying for is also a good idea if you have any questions about the section/job itself; you can find individual contact information here.
